Writing Numerals

These exercises have two answer choices. The student is given the number of blocks and must choose the correct numeral that corresponds to the number of blocks. Take the green unit blocks and place them on the squares in the book. Then circle the correct answer and cross out the incorrect answer. Trace the correct answer and say it, as shown in Examples 1 and 2.

You may choose different ways to have your student write the numerals. Please teach your student that there is more than one way to write the numeral "4." It may have a closed top, as shown in many books, or it may be open at the top, as we have written it on the worksheets.
In this lesson, practice writing the numerals from 0 to 9 . If your student is not ready for this use of his fine motor skills, you may continue by doing the lesson verbally and sharpen counting skills while you write in the correct answers.
Another exercise that may help familiarize your student with his numerals is to use note cards, or something similar. Write a number on each card and put the correct number of squares on each one corresponding to the number. Color them if you wish.
Then, when the numbers have been learned, have the student put them in sequential order. Encourage the student to say the numbers aloud as he or she plays with the cards.
